Modafusion in San Francisco

Modafusion in San Francisco

Modafusion is coming to San Fran! The purples reflect some of the gorgeous sunsets that occur over the Golden Gate Bridge, and the pops of color often seen in the designs. San Francisco is an eco-friendly city and hope you all are as excited as we are to come to your fine city. The organic nature of this display epitomizes modafusion.

Inspiration Board for Introduction of ModaFusion into Austin

This board consists of reds and oranges which can be shown through ModaFusion’s colorful work. We felt as though Austin, Texas would be the perfect place for this color palette because it represents energy, fun, and youth. Urban expansion into Austin, which is one of the top green cities, would fit perfectly into ModaFusion’s ethical fashion line.

Inspiration Board for Introduction of ModaFusion into Seattle

Image

The inspiration board consists primarily of blues because ModaFusion uses hues of blue in their designs and also Seattle is a “blue-toned” city. Also, floral patterns are something I think inspired the designers of the company in their dress designs because of shoulder pads and textures. The fruit represents a collaboration we intend on having with an organic food company, such as Whole Foods. You will see in upcoming posts that our inspiration boards are all different but have a common theme of Urban Growth and sustainability within each city. Below are some examples of ModaFusion’s past designs that coincide with this inspiration board.

Effects of manufacturing in the Textile Industry

In order to understand why eco-friendly clothing is important people should know about the effects of the textile industry on the environment.

There are many different chemicals used throughout the processes like dyeing, finishing, bleaching, etc. These processes use large amounts of water and therefore produces wastewater from the different steps which is released back into the environment.

Examples of harmful effects that production of fibers can cause:

Cotton: Reduced soil fertility, loss of biodiversity, water pollution, pesticide related problems, health related problems due to exposure of toxic pesticides, oil use for the machines, poor worker’s rights, hazardous working conditions

Wool: Pesticides, Animal cruelty (pour on pesticide), pesticides that are poured on the flock are also detrimental to human health.

Linen: Uses chemicals to control weeds, financially more costly because machines aren’t used like cotton

Polyester:  Petrochemical use impacts social/political/environmental, high ecological and social costs of oil exploration, high to medium potential for causing environmental damage—heavy metal cobalt, manganese salts.

Nylon:  Petrochemical feedstock are affected by social/political/environmental, energy intensive, greenhouse gas

Acrylic:  Energy intensive, consumes substantially more water than polyester, production chemicals can create environmental impacts

Viscose:  The production of viscose generates emissions to air in the form of sulphur, nitrous oxide, carbon disulphide and hydrogen sulphide

Not only this but the care of clothing also poses a threat to the environment. Constant laundering is wasteful so having clothing that can be more easily and sustainable taken care of is key for the fashion world to survive.

Everyone plays a role in sustainability. If we want resources to last then we must use them in the most sustainable way possible in order to preserve the environment we have.

Urban Expansion

Our group consisting of Samantha, Alyse, and Bri plan to bring the sustainable clothing of ModaFusion from Rio de Janerio, Brazil into America. We are specifically targeting Seattle, San Francisco, and Austin, which are areas that already have current knowledge of sustainability and are actively moving towards becoming more environmentally friendly. We are focusing on bringing growth into these areas to increase the awareness of going green through fashion shows and corporate sponsorship, like Whole Foods. Therefore we are going to overall direct our project on urban expansion in these areas. Whole Foods will sponsor events like fashion shows in each city and also advertise ModaFusion within their stores. We plan to inform the cities on the harmful effects of producing textiles to show why sustainable clothing is so important. ModaFusion hasn’t had much marketing in the last few years so we are going to bring that back for them through these ways stated above. Image

Modafusion 411

ModaFusion came about when a French journalist named Nadine, and a Brazilian designer Andrea, went to the Rio slums in Brazil. It was there that these two women discovered the talents of the native women who handmade clothing. It was then that they turned their social project promoting ethical fashion in Brazil, to an actual clothing line known as ModaFusion. The company now designs and develops high fashion collections ethically. They use organic cotton, PET from recycled plastic bottles, banana fibre, fish skin and bamboo in their collections.
